Casa Latina

Casa Latina is a non-profit organization that addresses the needs of the local Spanish-speaking community in the Roanoke Valley. They provide resources and programs to contribute to the well-being of native Spanish-speakers through education, cultural activities, and direct access to services. Their purpose is to strengthen individuals, families, and our community.

I had the pleasure of speaking about their role in the community with Casa Latina President, Dr. Kris Tilley-Lubbs, and board member, Ms. Cristina Moraza –

How was Casa Latina formed and founded?
About a decade ago, a survey was sent out to the community on how individuals and their family units defined their needs. The survey results inspired a passion to form a center for those that felt their needs weren’t being met, particularly in the Spanish-speaking community. It was essential in Roanoke’s growth. So, we got to work! In 2017, the organization officially established itself as a non-profit.”

Casa Latina is located off Williamson Road in the Church of the Brethren. What is the religious affiliation?
Casa Latina IS NOT religiously or politically affiliated. We want to inclusively serve the entire community. The Church we are located in has been such a wonderful asset in grounding our roots. We use their facilities for our main offices, as well as many of our programs and events.

Please tell me about the programs that are offered!
Our most inquiry-driven program is for ESL classes. It is a collaboration with Roanoke Valley Region 5 Adult Education. We have recently resumed in-person for the Kids Spanish Club. The pandemic made it tricky, but we did our best with virtual meetings! And the program with the largest need is a year-round collaboration with Feeding America - Southwest Virginia and Total Action for Progress. Every Wednesday, we distribute an average of 105 meals.
How can people get involved?
We always accept donations. Our website is the best place to do so. We also accept volunteers for different programs and events. We require each of our volunteers to complete an application and our volunteer coordinator will contact them for next steps.Click HERE to get involved!
What is Casa Latina's favorite thing about the Roanoke  community?
"We love our partners and the many opportunities that continue to evolve and grow the organization.
